Commentary and Checklist

This tragedy reminds those who have, care for, or work with children that swimming pools and other water features pose a significant safety risk and require policies, procedures, and constant vigilance.

Drowning can happen in as little as 20 to 60 seconds. It is silent and may not look like you expect. According to the CDC, more children (ages one to four) die from drowning than from any other cause of death. Also, drowning is the second leading cause of death for children ages five to fourteen.

What some safety precautions child caregivers with swimming pools should have in place to help protect children?

  • A trained adult should supervise children at all times when they are near water. Do not look away for even a few seconds.
  • The pool should be completely fenced and the gate locked and secured to prevent entry by children when they are not with adults.
  • Running, shoving, or pushing should be prohibited.
  • Depending on the swimming skill of the child, a life jacket or other approved flotation device must be used, in conjunction with adult supervision, when the child is in, or around, the pool.
  • Utilize a certified lifeguard.
  • Have a healthcare provider on standby.
  • Provide CPR certification training for all adults, as well as other water safety and lifesaving skills.
